You've Got the Estimate. Here's What You Need to Get Covered.
A calculator estimate tells you roughly what CAR cover costs. It doesn't put you on risk. This page lists the nine things you'll need to move from estimate to a bound policy, so you can gather them once and get covered without back-and-forth.
An estimate is not cover. If you've run the numbers and you're relying on that figure, you're not insured yet, and on a construction site the gap between "estimated" and "bound" is the gap where a loss isn't paid.
To turn your estimate into a policy that's actually on risk, you'll need nine things ready. Have them together and cover can be bound fast, usually before you take site possession.
None of these are hard to find. Most sit in your Letter of Award and contract documents. Here's the full list, why each one matters, and where to find it.
Just won the job?
Our post-tender checklist walks through everything a principal expects after award, including the insurance and bond documents. Pair it with the nine items below and you're ready to bind.
The 9 things you'll need to bind your CAR/EAR cover
| # | What you'll need | Why it matters | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Letter of Award or contract | Confirms the job is real and who the parties are | From the principal after award |
| 2 | Contract sum and BQ breakdown | Sets the works sum insured | Bill of Quantities / contract |
| 3 | Project start and completion dates | Sets the policy period, including the maintenance period | Contract programme |
| 4 | Site address and location | Affects flood and site-risk rating | Contract / site handover |
| 5 | Scope and nature of works | Decides CAR vs EAR and any special risks | Scope of works document |
| 6 | Principal / employer details | Names the joint insured on the policy | Letter of Award |
| 7 | Free-issue materials and existing property | Added to the sum insured so they're covered | Contract terms |
| 8 | Third-party liability limit required | Sets the TPL section of the policy | Contract insurance clause |
| 9 | Contractor details and CIDB grade | Confirms who's insured and their standing | Your company records |
The two that trip contractors up are numbers 5 and 7. Get the nature of works wrong and cover can be placed as CAR when it should be EAR. Leave out free-issue materials or the principal's existing property and the sum insured is short before the job even starts.
Why the estimate and the bound premium can differ
The calculator gives you a fast, close estimate from a few inputs. Binding uses the full picture, so the final premium can move once the real contract details are in.
| Estimate is based on | Binding also considers |
|---|---|
| Contract value and project type | Actual scope, special risks, and site location |
| A standard project duration | Your real programme plus the maintenance period |
| Works value only | Free-issue materials, existing property, TPL limit |
That's not a catch. It's the difference between a rough figure and cover that actually holds up at claim time. The more accurate the nine inputs, the closer the bound premium sits to the estimate.
Got the nine items ready?
Send them over and we'll turn your estimate into a bound CAR/EAR policy, usually before site possession. Missing a couple? Send what you have and we'll tell you what's outstanding.
What happens after you send the details
The path from estimate to on-risk is short when the information is ready. We confirm the cover and sums insured, issue the policy documents, and you have proof of insurance to give the principal before possession. Where the contract also needs a bond or workmen compensation, we arrange those in the same conversation so you're not chasing three providers.

FAQ
Is my calculator estimate the same as being insured?
No. An estimate is an indicative price. You're only on risk once cover is bound and the policy is issued. Until then, a loss would not be covered.
How long does it take to bind cover?
Once we have the nine items, cover can usually be bound quickly, often before site possession. The main delay is waiting on missing documents, which is why gathering them upfront helps.
Will my final premium match the estimate?
It's usually close, but it can move once the real scope, duration, and sums insured are confirmed. The more accurate your inputs, the smaller the difference.
What if I don't have all nine items yet?
Send what you have. We'll tell you exactly what's outstanding and, in many cases, can prepare most of the policy while you retrieve the rest.
Do you also arrange the bond and workmen compensation?
Yes. If your contract needs a performance bond or WC alongside CAR/EAR, we arrange them together so you deal with one point of contact. See our CAR cost guide for how the pieces price up.
Foundation Conclusion
The estimate got you the number. These nine items get you the policy, and only the policy pays a claim.
Send them over and we'll close the gap between "estimated" and "covered" before you're on site. That's the whole job.
